Bathing After Surgery

Patients often want to know if they can shower or take a bath after surgery. The short answer: YES!

We apply a waterproof silvery mepilex dressing to your surgical incision. This dressing stays in place for a week. This is waterproof, so you can take a shower! We let patients shower after their hip and knee replacements the day after surgery. No baths or soaking the incision for 3-4 weeks though.

The dressing stays in place for 1 week, and its taken off by the physical therapist or the patient at that time. Once the dressing is off, it does not need to be covered again and the patient can continue to shower as usual.
